Abstract
Objectives: Patients with alcohol dependence tend to lead to an early conclusion based on insufficient data under cognitively uncertain circumstances. Such reasoning bias is called ¡°jumping-to-conclusion.¡± The aim of this study is to identify the presence of ¡°jumping-to-conclusion¡± and to investigate the meaningful relationship of it with impulsivity and working memory in patients with alcohol dependence.

Methods: 31 hospitalized patients with alcohol dependence and 38 healthy subjects were enrolled in this study. All participants were male and they completed the following tests : the beads test, emotional card test, Barratt Impulsiveness Scale(BIS), the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test(WCST).

Results:Compared to healthy subjects, the patient with alcohol dependence group displayed the tendency of making an early conclusion in both the beads test and the emotional card test. The performance on the WCST of alcoholic group were significantly poorer than that of the control group. Patients with alcohol dependence scored higher than controls in the total score of the BIS and the motor, non-planning impulsiveness subscale scores. However, The scores on the beads and emotional card test did not show statistically significant relationship with those of the BIS and the WCST.

Conclusion: Based on the results of the beads and emotional card test, this study confirmed the presence of ¡°jumping-to-conclusion¡± bias in patients with alcohol dependence. In addition, it can be said that this bias is not significantly related to impulsivity and cognitive function damage.
